Summer is here!

Owen is approaching the beautiful age of two.  Things have been going great!  Cardiologist 2 year checkup was perfect, so we go back for an Echo next May.  Such a relief to hear he is doing well :)  Owen is getting better at the eating thing and feels a little more solid these days.  He is drinking from an open cup at most meals at the table and is working diligently at feeding himself with a fork and a spoon.    Meals will certainly be easier when he can do this all of the time.  Owen is still working with the OT every other week on chewing/jaw strength.  We are doing a therapeutic brushing protocol on Owen to help with eating and focusing, so far we have seen improvements when we implement it, so we are going to stick with it.  He has been doing it off and on for about 6 months.  We use a surgical type scrub brush and rub it on his legs, feet, hands, arms and back about 5 times per day, then follow with joint compressions.  It is supposed to improve his eating habits, decrease frustration, increase his attention span and allow him to be more calm... for a toddler :)

Owen and I have been working on a vegetable garden and are happy to report success!  Some of the seeds have sprouted and are promising food for us this summer... if we don't neglect them.  We planted all kinds of things.  Those that have made it are: tomatoes, zucchinis, sunflowers, peppers -red and jalepeno, beets, green beans, peas, lettuce, carrots, basil, chives, thyme and cilantro!

I just finished building a sand/water table for Owen for his 2nd birthday.  Andy taught me how to use all of the cool tools and I am proud to say that I did it all myself!  I followed the plans from the blog, Bumble and Bean.  She had all of the plans drawn up, a material list and a cut list.  It is so nice that people share their great ideas.  It took about a week to do- during naps and night time.  I used wood we had lying around in the barn, tubs from my classroom at school and stain that we used in the house- so it was all FREE!!! I think Owen will really love it :)  We have yet to fill it with sand or water... but soon!

The spring/summer weather has been beautiful!  We have gone to the park, the sprayground, played outside with the dogs, played with the garden hose, made s'mores around a bonfire and visited family in Chicago.  We hope to add some pool days at Grandpa & Grandma's soon!

21 months!

Owen has been doing really well since the last update.  As you can see, it is getting more difficult to photograph him sitting still in the car bean bag.  The gloves helped me get an authentic smile.  Owen loves gloves, especially when someone else is wearing them!  His personality and vocabulary has really exploded these last few months.  He knows hundreds of words and learns so quickly!  The one he likes to say the most is 'taco'.

Owen has developed some amazing talents, as well.  #1: He is able to locate the moon in the sky, saying 'moon' and pointing right to it every time (as long as it is out).  #2: He can do yoga moves, a front roll and push-ups.  #3: Pretending to ride the dogs is a lot of fun (see pictures in next post).  #4: He gets a gold star for effort in trying to carry ALL of his trains & cars at the same time... but cries in frustration when he can't.  #5: He can tell us his first AND last name, and does best in a knock-knock scenario, "Knock-knock.  Who's there?  Owen.  Owen who?  Dursch." #6: He can hear a sound from his bedroom and identify the appliance, without seeing it.  i.e. the coffee maker, dishwasher, toaster 'pop', the mixer, and the food processor 'cheese'.

Abilities & Info:
-weight: 20 lb. 11 oz.
-clothes size: 18 months pants (for length, but they fall down), 12-24 month shirts
-running ability developed around 20 months
-agile enough to walk in the woods over sticks
-climb up and down stairs with ease
-getting better at self feeding with a spoon and drinking from an open cup
-can slide down the slide without assistance
-using the potty for #1 at bedtime, not consistently
-says "up please" when he wakes up in the morning
-starting to say "please" and "thank you"
-loves to watch and play with other kids
-can open doors in the house
-loves to throw trash away and help wipe up spills

Health info:  Owen has stayed relatively healthy this winter.  Just a few colds and strep throat.  Nothing quite like last year!  We are still working with an occupational therapist on his eating mechanics.  He is still really weak in the jaw and has trouble breaking food down to swallow it.  We cut up a majority of foods into small pieces and mix it with a soft food, like applesauce, sour cream, ranch dressing, etc.  We are also adding heavy cream and butter to milk and foods to help pack on the pounds.  We see the OT every other week now to work on his bite and strengthen his jaw.  Things have improved for the most part since we began seeing her in November.  Stay tuned for more pictures!

Christmas Pics

18 months!

What an AMAZING age! Owen is growing up & learning so fast! Sorry it has been awhile since the last posting. We have been super busy just having fun :) Owen is doing wonderfully these days. His eating has been a lot better. We started seeing an Occupational Therapist on a weekly basis in November to work on a couple of things. The OT has us doing two exercises several times throughout the day - brushing his body and working his jaw with a teether toy. These exercises are helping to improve his chewing and allowing him to be more tolerant to various textures on his face and hands.

Fun stuff Owen is up to these days:
-walking full time (he started right around Christmas time)
-saying all sorts of words (favorites are "trash", "boom", "downstairs", "bath", "this")
-showing an interest in puzzles
-loves gloves and hats, especially when others are wearing them
-sporadically using the potty to #1
-helping unload the dishwasher and wiping up messes
-opening & closing doors
-favorite toys are trucks, farm stuff, tractors and blocks
-popular books: Pajama Time, John Deere Farm ABC, Colors, Moo Baa LaLaLa, Goodnight Moon
-sticking out his tongue and saying Ahhh when we brush his teeth
-popping bubbles has been a nice distractor while eating

Christmas was a special time for us. Andy & I discovered the joy of the holiday is even better with a kiddo. Owen loved the lights and presents and playing with all of his cousins. Watching Owen's tentative steps turn into a confident walk was the greatest present for us :) We are truly blessed to have a healthy little boy walking around!
