Merry Christmas! Happy Snow Days!

Owen and Mommy have been spending a lot of time together lately.  There were 2 snow days the week before Winter Break.  Winter Break is 2 weeks long, so we have about 5 more days left!  How awesome is it to be a teacher right now?!?  Owen has not yet been able to play in the snow, but he does love to look at it and dream of the fun times he has ahead.
Owen had his first Christmas and is now exhausted!  He got to see everyone!  He ended up sleeping through most of the present opening, so mom and dad got to open his gifts.  Next year he'll be ready.  His cousins JD, Ellie, Stephan, Alex, Jane and Evan showed him how it is done.  Owen got a high chair and exer-saucer thing from Santa.  His family gave him plenty of crinkly, noise making, shiny toys to keep him entertained.  Nothing too annoying though :)  Thanks everyone!

I need to grow into my Exer-Saucer!

We wish you all a Happy New Year!  We are looking forward to the exciting moments in 2011!

6 Months! A half a year has gone by?!?

A lot has happened since the last posting.  Owen had his 6 month appointment.  He weighs 12 pounds 10.6 ounces and is 25 inches long.  He is still below the 3rd percentile, but has been eating very well lately.  He has been on break from day care since December 15th, when he came down with a case of pink eye.  He has been using the break to get over all of his sicknesses.  I am sure he will begin getting sick again when he returns on Jan 3rd.

We began solid foods last week- rice cereal.  He is not a fan quite yet.  He just lets it all run out of his mouth and gets fussy.  If I sing to him, he will calm down and eat a little.  His favorite song? "Jingle Bells".  We tried sweet potatoes last night and he likes them.  I am going to try to make his food... we will see how long I can do this without being overly stressed- I can't even make dinner for Andy and I on some nights!  I am using Annabel Karmel's book Top 100 Baby Purees for some of the meals.

Some of the things Owen is doing at 6 months:
- just about to sit up by himself (can hold onto his toy to sit up)
- still resistant to tummy time and will roll to his back as soon as he is put on his tummy
- making the cutest sounds ever and giggling like crazy
- sleeping a ton! and eating a lot
- interacting with toys, hits them to make the noises
- not as distracted when nursing as he was last month
- happy as can be, unless he is tired- then he goes down for a nap and falls asleep fairly quickly

I cannot believe it has already been 6 months. Owen has been a ton of fun!  We look forward to all of the great moments we have ahead of us :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Owen had an excellent first Thanksgiving. We went to the Dursches', Strayers', Leuzingers' and Chicago Dursches' houses. We were very busy! Owen kept up quite well and loved being passed around by family. Here he is with Cousin JD during our visit to Chicago. He isn't eating any table food yet, so he wasn't able to enjoy any of the tasty feast... next year. He will be starting solids later this month (cereal) when he turns 6 months December 21st! Wow, how time has sped by.

Owen slept pretty much the entire 5 and a half hour drive to Chicago. We stopped to eat and for a diaper change. Mommy and Daddy were so proud of his contentment during the trip. He met his new cousin Audrey- born October 28th- and enjoyed watching big cousins JD and Ellie play with their toys. JD even let Owen play with his animals and Batman figure. What a nice guy! (Of course, he had to trade his rattle, links, and caterpillar to earn the right.)

A few new things Owen is doing:
- sitting up with assistance
- moving things from hand to hand, but then dropping it
- being very distracted while nursing
- giggling a lot, especially when daddy tickles him
- yelling at random times
- about to roll over from his back to tummy
- pulling his feet up towards his face
- loves looking in the mirror
- chewing and sucking on both thumbs at the same time, such talent!

We went to Owen's 5 month cardiologist appointment and all went well. They did an EKG, checked blood pressures, oxygen saturation, heart rate, and listened to his heart and lungs. They said he was doing great! He weighed 12 pounds 10 ounces and is 24.5 inches.  This is below the 3rd percentile for his height to weight comparison for his age, so they would like us to try to pack on some more pounds.  We go back in May for his sedated echo-cardiogram to look at the heart and make sure everything is still healed correctly.

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  Owen saw his first snow this weekend.  This weekend he has also been amazed at the progress of the kitchen remodel.  It will be done soon, we hope!  We posted more pictures in the album.

Gettin' Ready for Winter!

Andy thought that Owen should try on his snow outfit that Kay gave us in preparation for winter. It was a little big... hahaha.  As always, Andy and I got quite a laugh out of it :) We had the most gorgeous fall, but now its getting cold...booooo.

Not sure if you have noticed, but it has been awhile since our last post.  A lot has been going on.  So I will pick up the story from the Florida trip- our first family vacation.  It was great after the fussy night.  The rest of the time he was an angel.  He dressed up as a skeleton for Halloween (see pictures in the album).  Everyone in the airport thought he was pretty cute.  Andy was getting sick of random strangers staring at him and coming up to talk to us.  He got to hang out with his friend Julia for Halloween too.  No Trick or Treating though.  The weekend of Halloween, Owen went back to waking up at 2 am to eat.  So, the sleeping through the night only lasted a few blissful weeks.

The Monday after we returned, we started our trial run at day care.  We did half days the first week.  I went into work each day to ease into things a bit.  I met with my sub and spent a little time with the kiddos so the transition would be as seamless as possible.  Tuesday I did the drop off but had a very difficult time with it, so Andy does the drop offs now :) Friday was our first full day of day care.  He didn't eat much while he was there and seemed to be a little fussy.  The teachers suggested sending in a 'mommy shirt' each day to keep my scent around and it helped a lot.  Owen had his first cold and fever that weekend.  He seemed to be a pretty happy sick kid though!  I had a sinus infection or something and was not nearly as happy as little O.

Last week was my 'official' first week back to work.  The first two days were exhausting- since I wasn't feeling well... I took a nap each night around 7:30-9.  Each day at work got a little better- I'm getting back into the swing of things.  This week is going by quickly, maybe because Thanksgiving break is right around the corner.

It is wonderful seeing Owen at the end of each day.  He is so happy to see me when I pick him up.  They say he is a charmer at day care.  Holding hands with the girls and smiling all the time.  He was in a great mood today when I picked him up.  Owen was just laughing at everything.  It really made all of the stress from the day melt away.  We are looking forward to this weekend for the Dursch Thanksgiving and Jessie and Caroline's baby shower.  Next Wednesday we go back to Children's for Owen's 5 month post-op checkup and EKG. Then, next weekend we are off to Chicago to see the Dursches and their new baby Audrey. (Owen's cousin)

Hopefully I will get some more photos taken soon and get a little more regular with the posting.  Maybe things will slow down a bit so I can fit it all in!  Thanks for being patient for this update.  Have a great Thanksgiving!

He Rolled Over!!! YAY!

Owen stuck to the old saying, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again..." He has been attempting for a couple of weeks now to roll from his tummy to his back and today he did it!  He had a lot of encouragement from mom and dad and no assistance!  Way to go big guy!  Guess we need to baby proof the home soon, because he will be crawling before we know it.

First Trip to Siesta Key!

We are currently on a little vacation in Siesta Key.  Owen had his first plane ride.  I was 18 years old the first time I flew on a plane... Owen 4 months.  What a lucky guy!  He did fantastic.  People were complementing him on his excellent behavior.  He ate and slept the whole flight.  I hope we are as fortunate on the return flight :)  He balanced things out the night we arrived though.  He didn't sleep at all during the day, I guess he was trying to take in all of his new surroundings!  He cried (very loudly) for about 5 straight hours and would not go to bed (7-midnight) so we did a middle of the night call to the doctor for the first time.  (Sorry Dr. Eberhart!)  We concluded that he may be in pain, so he suggested giving him a little bit of medication.  We sent daddy out for a late night trip to the drug store.  Owen was asleep within 30 minutes of taking the meds.  He has been better ever since... thankfully.

We have gone on a few walks and spent a little time on the beach.  Things are a more restful now that Owen is back to normal.  Andy is getting some reading in and I am working on lesson plans.  Whoo Hoo!  We have been taking Owen everywhere with us.  Vacations are very different when you have a baby with you!  We would go for more walks on the beach but Owen is a big baby when it comes to the wind and we are being very cautious about keeping him out of the sun.  He has tender skin like his mommy!  Owen likes his new Pea Pod Travel Bed- it is like a little pop up tent for kids under 2.  We took it to the beach also to keep the wind, sand and sun off of him.  It worked pretty well, except for the sand part (since Siesta's sand is so fine).

We have added some pictures in the album from Owen's first visit to the beach and village of Siesta Key.

Four Month Doctor Visit

Owen is doing great!  He got his four month shots this week and did well.  He weighs 11 pounds 14 ounces and is 24.5 inches tall.  5th percentile for weight and 25th for height.  The Dr. says he looks wonderful.  He is grabbing for things, lifting his head, looking all around, arching his back, laughing, chewing on his hands, sleeping through the night, trying very hard to roll over from tummy to back, and showing zero interest in putting weight on his legs.  He set a personal record for length of time between bowel movements:  11 days!  (the doctor said it is normal for BF babies- I asked several times...)  Also, his blocked tear duct cleared up a couple weeks ago, so no more goopy eyes, now just straight up tears!  See the next post for a few more firsts for little Owen.

Owen's 1st Leuzinger Reunion

Owen had a great time yesterday at his first of many Leuzinger reunions. He was an angel and slept most of the time. He really liked cousin Lily because she played with him almost the entire time he wasn't sleeping :) In the picture he is posing with cousin Evan. They were a little more interactive during this meeting, which was fun. Evan was trying to teach Owen how to growl, it was pretty cute! It was nice to see the family. We get together about every 2 years. Pete and I ruled the corn hole boards! Go Mommy!

Cousin Alex got to hold Owen for the first time at the reunion. He thought it was appropriate to spit up while she was holding him and I don't think she was a fan. Great job Owen, now she will never hold you again!

We go to the pediatrician for 4 month shots next week! Hopefully he does as well as last time. We have been playing outside a lot lately, as the fall weather has been gorgeous! 60-80's and sunny! The trees are dressed in their beautiful browns, oranges, yellows and reds. A spectacular sight!

15 weeks! 3 month pic :)

We are a little behind... but here is Owen at 3 months! He has had a few milestones recently. He can now lift his head and likes tummy time :) YAY! He laughs out loud and makes a high pitched squeal when he thinks something is funny. He is infatuated with his hand and loves to stare at it and try to jam the whole thing into his mouth. He has started to narrow things down to one finger at times and usually goes for sucking on his index finger and thumb of his right hand. He loves to talk to us and will get actual words out soon! He sleeps for six hours during the night from 9-3. Pretty nice! The goal is to get it to about 8 hours by the time mommy goes back to work in November. Wish us luck!

Owen's new friend Julia was born Friday and we cannot wait to meet her! Owen had his first Durschtoberfest experience and met several new people. He was the hit of the party and barely spent any time with mommy and daddy. The root beer that he helped make was delicious! We have posted some new pics in the album of the last few weeks. Enjoy! Happy fall!

3 months!

I can't believe it has been 3 months!  Nothing remarkable happened this week.  We have enjoyed the fall weather and gone for a walk everyday this week.  Owen likes to fall asleep on our walks.  We went to see Great Grandma Charlotte.  She really loved seeing him and is very impressed with his super tiny feet.  She also isn't sure if she likes Owen's name :) Too unique she says.

Grandma Vicki gave us some more worms for our compost bin.  I accidentally left them in the house and we had some escape and die before I could get new bedding in their bin :(  They got pretty smelly too.  In the picture Owen is helping me put the worms in their new home.  He will really love feeding and playing with the worms when he is older.

Oh, wonderful news!  I finished my Content Area Reading Course I was taking this summer!  (I needed it to renew my teaching license.) It was a lot of work, but I am so happy it is done.  My stress level has dropped tremendously!

12 Weeks!

Owen has begun to show an interest in books. Here he is reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We have had a great week! Mom is almost finished with her homework for a reading class she is taking, so the fun is ready to begin! I have a little more time off and can't wait to spend it enjoying the weather with my little boy! Owen is getting into a routine. Still nursing about every 3 hours, then playtime for about 1 to 1 and a 1/2 hours, then a nap for 1 to 1 and a 1/2 hours. He loves to sleep just like his mommy. He has had a few nights where he has slept for 6 hours during the nighttime. Keep it up Owen! Owen got to meet his cousins Stephan and Alex this weekend!  Here is a picture of Stephan and Owen at Heather's Patio. We will hopefully get a picture of him with Alex soon (she hasn't gotten to hold him yet). Cousins Jane and Evan stopped by to visit with Uncle Johnny on Sunday. It was nice to see them :) Owen will be visiting his Great Grandma Charlotte tomorrow- he is the star of the nursing home when he visits!

Size news: Owen weighs about 10 and 1/2 pounds now. He is quickly outgrowing his 0-3 month clothes- mainly because he is getting so long! He will be 3 months old next week! Time is going by so quickly! It seems like forever since we were in the hospital! We have enjoyed every moment of being home :) I would love for time to slow down for a bit...

Happy 30th Birthday Daddy!

Today was Andy's 30th birthday :) We had a wonderful weekend with family. The weather was superb- 70s and sunny, with a nice breeze. Owen LOVES it outside! Andy's whole family got together for Labor Day weekend and the birthday- even his brothers from Chicago and Las Vegas! Owen got to play with his cousins JD and Ellie for the first time and survived having trains choo choo on his head :) He sported his Miami Polo for the game... but the Redhawks lost... boo. Still, he looked pretty cute.

Some milestones this week-
Owen licks and chews on his right hand. He likes to lay on the floor and coo, talk and smile for an extended period of time. He really liked nursing every two hours for the past week, but is back to every three hours now, thankfully. We attribute it to a growth spurt. Owen is getting better at laying on his tummy, but still working on the head lifting thing. Also, we have stopped using SwaddleMes at night since he squirms and fusses in them (see picture in album), so we moved to a wearable blanket.

New pictures!

We are posting some new pictures to the album to the right! Andy took this good one, but then the little guy started crying, so we are postponing the photo session for another time.

2 months!

Owen is now 2 months old! Wow! We are a little more relaxed now that things are more routine. We can count on him to be awake a little after feeding and then get a good 1-2 hour nap in. We have been venturing out for breakfast and dinner a bit while he is in this routine. Owen had his 2 month check up this week. Are you ready for this?..... Owen weighs 9 pounds 8 ounces and is 22 1/4 inches. He has gone up to the 10th percentile in weight and 25th in height! I guess nursing is going well :) He had some shots- he cried for 30 seconds during the first poke and stopped after the nurse was done. He did wonderful that night and the next day too! Hopefully this continues.

Smile Factory

This little man is smiling like crazy now. It makes mommy happy :) He is so fun to watch and play with. I am glad I get to be home for a while longer to hang out with him some more. My teacher pals and students started back to school this week. I went in for Open House to see the kiddos. They all had grown up so much over the summer!

Sorry to all of our devoted followers out there. We did not get around to posting last weekend :( Been having too much fun with Owen! He has been doing awesome. Making huge strides in the feeding arena. He has been nursing full time now for an entire week! We are so proud of him. This is so much easier on mommy- maybe this is why Owen is so happy... because mommy is happy! (notice that in the picture he loves mommy) He turned 2 months this weekend. We will post pictures soon in his car. Owen and I spent the weekend at Gma and Gpa L's house because Andy and Grandpa Strayer were working on installing a 16 foot band of windows in mommy's soon to be amazingly, beautiful kitchen. The house is still a mess, but the windows are a spectacular sight!

We go to the pediatrician this week for a checkup, weigh in and some shots. Shhh.... don't tell Owen.

What's Up Dog?

Owen looking cool in his doggie hat after a bath :) He doesn't seem to mind wearing a hat and looks pretty cute. His hats fit now since his brain has been developing exponentially over the last several weeks! Thought I would stick a math word in for my students out there that are reading :)

First Tub Bath!

Well done for the first tub bath :) We love the puj tub!  Great job Mr. Owen! Very little crying... he loves the water. YAY!

Posted by Picasa

This is the noise in my ear as I type this post... and I thought a mosquito buzzing in my ear was a nuisance! Other than the crying fits Owen is currently going through, this has been a pretty good week. Mr. Bubbles is still packing on the pounds and his neck is getting a lot stronger. It may take a few more months before he's actually able to support the entire weight of is large cranium. He's now up to 8 lbs and 21 inches long which puts him in the 3rd percentile. He's so close to setting a new littleness standard!

Finally, he's cried himself to sleep. As long as I don't move for the next hour we should be good!

oops... I moved, here we go again!!!

We went to the cardiologist for a follow up visit on Wed. and he was very happy with Owen's progress. He even said no more Lasix, so you know what that means... no more meds! The picture shows him getting an Echocardiogram. Looks complicated, but was very fast and painless :)

Since he's doing so well mom is starting to get a little more adventurous with the little guy and starting to take him out into the fresh air (no he hasn't been locked in the basement). He made his first trip to Heather's Cafe, had his first Gator ride at Grandma and Grandpa Leuzinger's, and even got to meet his cousins Jane and Evan for the first time today. Evan is only 3 months older but next to Owen he looks like he's five, or maybe it's Owen that looks like he's negative 2 months...

Owen has been a wonderful new addition to the family. I even cleaned poo off the bottom of his foot today, how's that for bonding?!?
